Intelligent sensing for safer roads
Road Eye Sensor is a patented contactless sensor concept designed for monitoring the road surface and identifying conditions that influence vehicle friction and road safety.
The Road Eye is a patented non-contact sensor concept for monitoring the road surface. The information from the sensor can, for instance, be used for warning a driver for low friction when there is ice on the road.
The measuring principle is spectral analysis of backscattered laser radiation from the road surface. The sensor is designed to provide information about road conditions without physical contact with the road.
At LTU in Luleå, Sweden, research has been carried out on the optical properties of road surfaces covered with water, ice and snow.
The sensor is designed by Dr. Sten Löfving and uses spectral analysis of backscattered laser radiation from the road surface.
Detect important road conditions
Dry Road
Most important condition to identify and associated with the best friction.
Moisture on Road
Detects moisture present on the road surface.
Wet Road
Identifies wet surface conditions affecting road safety.
Clear Ice
Ice without air bubbles, which can be very dangerous.
Ice / Packed Snow
Detects ice and packed snow conditions on the road.
Short Distance
Designed to be mounted directly on vehicles.
- Measurement range up to about 2 meters
- Update time about 60 ms
- Suitable for different vehicle speeds on public roads
- Compact sensor design
Long Distance
Designed to be mounted at roadside locations.
- Long-distance road monitoring
- Suitable for roadside installations
- Contactless road condition monitoring
- Suitable for monitoring applications
Compact sensing for vehicle applications
The range of the SD sensor is up to about 2 meters and the update time is about 60 ms, which can be converted to the sampling length on the car for all possible speeds on public roads.
The Road Eye SD sensor has been used in a lot of projects at LTU. The SD type has been investigated in big road research projects like the IVSS project. The SD model has been tested by car manufacturers and suppliers.
